International Womens Day

This International Women's Day, we honour the remarkable Lady Anne Clifford, one of history's earliest advocates for women's rights. Born in 1590 as the only surviving child of George Clifford, the third Earl of Cumberland, she was denied her rightful inheritance - a challenge she boldly confronted, defying both her father's will and King James I himself.

Lady Anne 's unyielding determination saw her reclaim the Clifford estates, where she fiercely resisted Oliver Cromwell's attempts to halt her restoration of the family's castles. For nearly three decades, she commanded influence across Westmorland, overseeing the restoration of churches and castles, selecting Members of Parliament, and even appointing the Mayor of Appleby.

To delve deeper into her extraordinary legacy, we are honoured to welcome Jessica Malay - Emeritus Professor of English Renaissance Literature at the University of Huddersfield and a leading authority on Lady Anne Clifford's life and writings.

Professor Malay's research has been crucial in clarifying Lady Anne's legacy, covering:

  • The Great Books of Record - A monumental historical document chronicling six centuries of the Clifford family's legacy, providing key insights into Lady Anne's legal battles and unwavering resolve.
  • Autobiographical Writings - Through transcriptions of Lady Anne's diaries and memoirs, Dr. Malay offers a rare glimpse into her life at the courts of Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I, as well as the personal challenges she overcame.
  • Lady Anne's Personal Library - A recent discovery of an inventory from Appleby Castle reveals Lady Anne's impressive collection of 168 books, spanning subjects such as theology, history, science, and architecture - a testament to her intellectual pursuits.
  • Through her meticulous scholarship, Professor Malay has illuminated Lady Anne Clifford's place in history, showcasing her impact on early modern women's literature and the cultural heritage of Northern England.

Join us as we celebrate Lady Anne Clifford's legacy, an enduring symbol of resilience, intellect, and the fight for women's rights.
